Al Ahly eye former Mamelodi Sundowns coach

Al Ahly seem to have a connection to South Africa off late, whether it be love or hate.

Particularly though, Al Ahly seem to have their connection with players and staff associated to Mamelodi Sundowns past or present.

Red Devils connection to South Africa

Al Ahly appointed former Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane as their head coach in 2021. The South African won two CAF Champions League titles with the Egyptian Red Devils. He also led them to league victory as well as FIFA Club World Cup bronze. During his time there, he also facilitated the move for his former player at Masandawana in Percy Tau

Just like Mosimane, for the longest time, Tau was loved and appreciated at Al Ahly. But when things didn’t go well behind the scenes, things changed. The Bafana Bafana international is reportedly on his way out of the club with a termination thought to have been agreed. The recent link with the club of the century and South Africa came courtesy of Relebohile Mofokeng

It was reported that Al Ahly are interested in Mofokeng but have since denied approaching Orlando Pirates for his services. Now according to Soccer-Laduma, Al Ahly are keeping tabs on former Sundowns and Wydad Casablanca coach Rulani Mokwena

Mokwena the next?

“It is understood their (Wydad Casablanca’s) Egyptian counterparts have emerged as firm favourites to make Mokwena an offer he can’t refuse if he does become available in the near future. With Al Ahly having a high turnover of coaches and often feeling the need for change, Mokwena has made their shortlist for consideration.’ Wrote the publication.

Mokwena’s time at Wydad has not been smooth sailing, but he has received the club’s backing thus far. Having only been appointed by the Red Castle at the start of the current season, the South African will likely be looking to establish himself in Morocco first. Do you think Mokwena should join Al Ahly should the opportunity present itself? Feel free to leave your thoughts and feelings in the comments below.
