Africa is home to some of the world’s most prestigious universities, with some ranking in the top 200 globally. From South Africa to Egypt to Morocco, Africa is indeed a continent that boasts excellence in education. According to Business Insider Africa, these are the top 10 universities in Africa.

Here is a list of the top 10 universities in Africa:

10. Kafrelsheikh University (Egypt)

Kafrelsheikh University is a public university in Egypt that opened its doors in 2006. It is one of Egypt’s newly created universities. The university was initially annexed to Tanta University when it was created in 1973 and later became Kafrelsheikh University as more colleges were built over the years. The university has 19 colleges and three institutes in total.

9. Future University in Egypt

Future University is a leading private university located in Cairo, Egypt. It opened its doors in 2006 by Presidential Decree 254/2006 according to law number 101/1992. The university has six faculties which are the faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine, Pharmacy, Engineering and Technology, Economics and Political Science, Commerce and Business Administration and Computers and Information Technology.

8. American University 

American University is located in New Cairo, Egypt. It is a leading English-language, American-accredited institution of higher education and centre of intellectual, social and cultural life of the Arab. The university has a 95% alumni employed within the first year of graduation and has 12 research centres.

7.  University of KwaZulu-Natal

The University of KwaZulu-Natal is located in Durban, South Africa. It was founded in 2004 after the University of Durban-Westville and the University of Natal merged. The university has five campuses which are Howard College, Nelson R. Mandela School of Medicine, Edgewood Campus, Pietermaritzburg Campus and Westville Campus.

6. Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology

Egypt-Japan University for Science and Technology was founded in 2009 in Alexandria, Egypt, as a project between the Egyptian and Japanese governments. Despite being both Egypt’s and Japan’s project, the university is run entirely by the Egyptian government.

The University of Johannesburg is located in Johannesburg, South Africa. The university has eight faculties which consist of Art, Design and Architecture, Education, Engineering and the Built Environment, Health Sciences, Humanities, Law, and Science, and the College of Business and Economics.

4. Mohammed VI Polytechnic University

The Mohammed VI Polytechnic University is a research university located in Benguerir, Morocco. The university was founded in 2009 by His Majesty King Mohammed VI as part of the OCP Group’s major urban development projects. There are four faculties in this institution which are Science and Technology, Humanities Economics and Social Sciences, Business and Management and Medical and Paramedical.

3. University of the Witwatersrand

The University of Witwatersrand popularly known as WITS, is a public research university located in Johannesburg, South Africa. The university was founded in 1896 and became the Transvaal University College in 1906 after being transferred from Kimberley to Johannesburg. The university was fully named the University of the Witwatersrand in March 1922.

The institution has over 40 000 students and is the leading university in Africa in the Faculty of Humanities.

2. Stellenbosch University

Stellenbosch University is the oldest university in South Africa located in Stellenbosch, Western Cape. The university has 32 225 students and 3 400 academic and professional staff across five campuses and 10 faculties.

The number one university in Africa is none other than the University of Cape Town. It is a public research university located in Cape Town, South Africa. It was founded in 1829 as the South African College which was formerly a high school for boys. It was recognised as a university from 1880 to 1900 and has five faculties which are the faculty of Commerce, Engineering & the Built Environment, Health Sciences, Humanities, Law, Science, Graduate School of Business and Centre for Higher Education Development.

It is the only university in Africa that is part of the Global University Leaders Forum (GULF) under the World Economic Forum. It is also the only African university ranked in the top 200 universities in the world.
