  • Jacob Zuma gives the ANC until the end of January to take him back or face legal action.
  • His MK party won 45% of votes in KZN but struggles in by-elections outside the province.

Jacob Zuma wants to stay in the ANC even though he’s running a rival party that took many ANC votes in the last election.

The former president was kicked out of the ANC in July after starting the MK party, which he claimed would save the ANC from people loyal to white business.

This story helped MK win 15% of national votes and 45% in KwaZulu-Natal.

But since his expulsion, MK has struggled to win support beyond KZN, taking only two by-elections – one in Umzumbe, KZN and another in Marikana, Rustenburg.

On Wednesday, Zuma threatened to take the ANC to court if they don’t reverse his expulsion by the end of January.

ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula hit back hard.

“He had an opportunity to send his love letter many days ago. He didn’t but he chose this day,” he said.

Mbalula was referring to 8 January, which is a significant date in the ANC calendar as it was founded on this day 113 years ago at a church in Mangaung.

“That is how he works, that is how he operates, a mischievous, uncouth, ridiculous old man who thrives on disunity for his self-interests.”

The ANC claims Zuma confused its supporters into thinking his new party was helping the ANC.

Without ANC membership, Zuma can’t keep claiming MK was formed to save the ruling party from losing power.
