Zahara, whose real name was Bulelwa Mkutukana, died in December 2023 in hospital, reportedly due to liver complications.
She was laid to rest in her home village of Phumlani in the Eastern Cape, following a public memorial service attended by fellow musicians, political leaders, and members of the community.
Her sister, Nomonde Mkutukana, died in hospital in 2021 after she was hit by a taxi in East London.
The family shared in a statement at the time that Nomonde had been driving back from work when the incident occurred. She was run over by a taxi on the side of the N2 while checking a fault on her vehicle.
In 2014, Zahara’s younger brother, Mbuyiseli, was murdered in East London. He was reportedly caught in crossfire between rival gangs in a nearby village.
Mbuyiseli’s body was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds on the banks of a river in Next Camp.
