When is the next public holiday in South Africa?

Following on from the long Easter weekend, there have been two more public holidays in South Africa just last week, which saw Freedom Day observed and then a celebration of Workers’ Day.

After this wonderful stretch of public holidays, South Africans might be wondering when the next one will take place.

It is going to be a bit of a wait, though, with the next public holiday falling on Monday, 16 June, when Youth Day will be celebrated.

REMAINING PUBLIC HOLIDAYS IN SOUTH AFRICA THIS YEAR

16 June: Youth Day

9 August: National Women’s Day

24 September: Heritage Day

16 December: Day of Reconciliation

25 December: Christmas Day

26 December: Day of Goodwill

**The Public Holidays Act (Act No 36 of 1994 [PDF]) determines whenever any public holiday falls on a Sunday, the Monday following on it shall be a public holiday.

Meanwhile, the Department of Basic Education (DBE) confirmed that the June holidays in 2025 will begin on 28 June.

The school year is divided into four terms: 15 January to 28 March (Term 1), 8 April to 27 June (Term 2), 22 July to 3 October (Term 3), and 13 October to 10 December (Term 4).
