Nicknamed ‘Tsiki-Tsiki,’ Mooki celebrated his 50th birthday at midnight on October 22, marking half a century of life and a legacy intertwined with the storied club.

Mooki’s finesse and flair truly defined his playing style throughout his career, starting from his debut season in 1994 under coach Philippe Troussier and extending to his final appearance in 2009 with Muhsin Ertugral in charge. In his inaugural season, he made a remarkable impact by playing 21 games, showcasing his talent and helping Kaizer Chiefs lift the BP Top 8 trophy. His contributions not only highlighted his skill but also set the tone for a celebrated career with the club.

Mooki’s trophy-laden journey

Mooki’s trophy cabinet began to fill quickly, starting with the Coca-Cola Challenge, which transitioned into a mini-league format in 1996. He clinched consecutive Rothmans Cups and later added the BOB Save Super Bowl title to his accolades during the Operation Vat Alles era, a time when the Soweto giants dominated domestic football. His success continued with two Coca-Cola Cup wins and the 2006 Absa Cup victory.

Beyond his club achievements, Mooki made his mark internationally, scoring in the memorable 3-2 COSAFA Castle Cup defeat to Namibia in Windhoek in January 1998. He also represented South Africa at U20 and U23 levels, showcasing his versatility and skill on the field.

The end of an era

In his final season, 2008/2009, Mooki played all seven games as a substitute. Culminating in the infamous 4-3 Nedbank Cup loss to the University of Pretoria. Although his contract was not renewed, he retired having solely worn the Kaizer Chiefs jersey, amassing 407 appearances and scoring 40 goals.
