South African National Parks (SANParks) has announced the closure of a major access gate at the West Coast National Park.

As reported by Tourism Update, the R27 Gate, one of the main entryways into the park, will be closed from 22 April to 14 June while the facility undergoes maintenance and upgrades, which began in early February.

Some of the upgrades to this gate will include improvements for traffic flow management, streamlined ticketing systems as well as enhanced visitor amenities, all which are part of SANParks’ broader strategy to modernise infrastructure at the West Coast park.

Until 14 June, all visitors will be rerouted through the Langebaan Gate along the park’s northern edge.

West Coast National Park is a popular spot for tourists and locals, and is known for its striking contrast of white sand beaches, turquoise waters, and rolling inland fynbos.

The park’s Postberg section, which opens only in spring, August–September, simply explodes with wildflowers, offering some of the best displays in the country during the annual flower season.

Langebaan Lagoon, with its calm, clear saltwater lagoon, is another popular section at the park, drawing kite surfers, kayakers, and birdwatchers.
