Want to own Batman’s Tumbler? It’ll cost you R52 million

Warner Bros. is selling a piece of cinema history—the famous Batman Tumbler from Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy.

But you’ll need deep pockets if you want one parked in your garage.

BATMAN’S TUMBLER

Each Tumbler is priced at a whopping $3 million, which is around R52 million in South African rands, according to Nexus Hub.

It’s quite an investment, but for fans of Batman and classic film memorabilia, it might be hard to resist.

The Tumbler first appeared in Batman Begins in 2005 and quickly became iconic.

Unlike previous versions of the Batmobile, the Tumbler had a rugged, military-inspired design. Its angular body and jet-black colour made it look like a cross between a tank and a sports car.

BATMAN’S TUMBLER BUILT FOR FUNCTIONALITY

Director Christopher Nolan insisted on realism for his Batman films, so the team built the Tumbler to be fully functional.

Stunt drivers really drove this beast through scenes in The Dark Knight, Batman Begins, and The Dark Knight Rises.

The team crafted it with Kevlar, carbon fibre, and aeronautical steel, giving it an armoured, indestructible feel, according to Fortune.

“One engineer from the production team says, ‘The Tumbler was built to survive Gotham’s rough streets.’”

BATMAN’S TUMBLER SPECIFICS

Each Tumbler runs on a 6.2-litre petrol engine, producing a whopping 390kW of power and 659Nm of torque.

This makes it powerful enough to tear through any obstacle Batman might face, though you won’t find it taking any shortcuts through Johannesburg traffic.

Unfortunately, the Tumbler isn’t street-legal, which means it’s more of a collector’s showpiece than an actual means of transport.

You’ll need to arrange a special invite to even consider buying one.

A ONCE IN A LIFTIME COLLECTOR’S ITEM

Warner Bros. is confident these models will soon find homes with avid collectors worldwide, according to Drive.

Fans should note that these Tumblers are missing the impressive gadgets Batman had access to.

The films depicted the Tumbler loaded with rockets, missile launchers, and a deployable Batpod motorcycle.

While this is a toned-down version, the vehicle still feels like it could take on Gotham’s toughest criminals. The interior seats two people, but without the buttons and screens seen in the movies.

“It’s all about the thrill of owning a piece of Batman’s world,” says a representative from Warner Bros.

CHRISTOPHER NOLAN’S NEW FILM

It’s easy to see why fans are drawn to this powerful machine, even if it’s mostly for display.

The timing of the sale coincides with Christopher Nolan’s work on a new film.

He’s traded Gotham for the 1920s, working on a vampire horror set for release in 2026.

The untitled project reportedly stars big names like Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, and Matt Damon.

THE BATMAN LEGEND

While fans hope Nolan will return to superhero movies, the director stated in 2023 that he had no plans to revisit the genre, having shifted his focus to new creative territory.

For South African Batman fans with a cool R52 million to spare, buying the Tumbler is a chance to own a piece of Batman’s legend.

THE BATMAN TUMBLER: AN ICONIC VEHICLE

Imagine the thrill of having this iconic vehicle in your collection.

You won’t be able to drive it down the streets of Cape Town, but it’s sure to be a talking point at any gathering.

Owning the Tumbler is an expensive fantasy, but for the right collector, it’s worth every cent.
