Vusi appear in court for attempting to murder Tebogo
Controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala appeared in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
He stood alongside his wife, Tsakani Matlala, and two other accused in connection with the attempted murder of his former partner, actress and media personality Tebogo Thobejane.
The charges stem from a terrifying incident that took place in October 2023, when Thobejane survived a drive-by shooting in Sandton.
She recalled the moment a car pulled up beside her BMW and opened fire, leaving her wounded and injuring her passengers.
“I’ve been living in fear since that night,” Thobejane shared.
Matlala, who was taken into custody in May 2025, has remained a trending figure on social media due to his alleged links with high-ranking government and police officials.
His name recently surfaced during a high-profile media briefing by General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, where it was revealed that Matlala has ties to prominent figures, including Police Minister Senzo Mchunu.
The businessman, who has long been accused of operating questionable businesses and evading justice due to his alleged political connections, is now facing multiple legal battles.
According to reports, the attempted murder case, along with charges of conspiracy to commit murder, will be moved to the Johannesburg High Court.
Authorities are also looking to consolidate additional charges from Pretoria West and Lyttleton into a single case.
Vusi Matlala has previously made headlines for allegedly securing a R360 million SAPS tender despite having no formal qualifications.
The matter was flagged by slain whistleblower Babita Deokaran, who reportedly uncovered corruption tied to the deal.
Following a series of police raids, authorities discovered unlicensed firearms and high-end luxury items, including a Rolex watch, at Matlala’s properties.
Adding to the controversy, Matlala was allegedly caught with a cellphone inside his prison cell during a recent raid.
Entertainment blogger Musa Khawula has also linked him to the murder of popular DJ Sumbody in a resurfaced post that has since gone viral.
His wife and co-accused will remain out on bail as the matter was postponed to August.
