Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs suffered shocking defeats this weekend in the Betway Premiership.
Both teams showed impressive form in their opening two league fixtures, managing to secure victories in their initial matches. When they clashed in the highly anticipated third round in September, Sundowns emerged 2-1 winners.
Sundowns came into the match knowing a win would get them back to the top of the log. In a dramatic turn of events, Polokwane City clinched all three points at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium thanks to a late goal from Bulelani Nikane. This defeat marked Masandawana’s first setback in the league, making them lose precious ground to their rivals, Orlando Pirates.
Pirates remain unbeaten as Sundowns and Chiefs suffer defeats
The Buccaneers continued their remarkable start to the season, achieving their fifth consecutive victory with a win over AmaZulu on Friday evening.
Just like Sundowns, Chiefs faced a disappointing defeat in Polokwane where they were narrowly beaten 1-0 by SuperSport United on Saturday evening. This loss was particularly significant for Amakhosi, who found themselves slipping down to ninth place on the league table after playing four matches. The pressure is now mounting on them to turn their fortunes around in the upcoming fixtures.
Their next fixture is against Magesi FC on Wednesday evening.
Pirates lead the way with 15 points followed by Sundowns with 12. AmaZulu are rooted in 16th after losing all their league matches so far this season.
