Moreover, even though 13-million mothers already receive the R530 SASSA Child Support Grant every month, the government still believes more can be done for young mothers with newborns. As a result, the agency put out an urgent call last month for November 2024 SASSA Childcare grants.

Of the three different types of November 2024 SASSA Childcare grants that will be paid next week (Thursday 7 November 2024), the most popular is the Child Support Grant. As mentioned, this pays out R530 per month and to qualify all you have to do is pass the following means test:

  • Earn less than R8 800 per month if you’re married (R105 600 annually).
  • Earn less than R4 400 per month if you’re single (R52 800 annually).

Of course, you child must be under the age of 18, and you cannot receive more than one of three November 2024 SASSA Childcare grants at any one time. So, what about Foster Child or Child Care Dependency grants?

The other two November 2024 SASSA Childcare grants are for foster children and those with mental or physically disablity. Child Care Dependency is more or less a disabled grant for someone under the age of 18. Therefore, you will need to have your child declared disabled by a government-appointed doctor. Likewise, you are only eligible for Foster Child grant if you are the rightful, court-appointed foster parent of a minor, in accordance with the South African Child Care Act. Child Care Dependency pays R2 190 and Foster Child R1 180 respectively.

Diarise the remaining childcare grant dates till they are renewed and increased in April 2025:

HOW TO APPLY FOR CHILDCARE IN 2024

The sooner you register your newborn child with Home Affairs, the better. Image: File

Crucial to mothers gaining access to November 2024 SASSA Childcare grants is registering a newborn birth with the Department of Home Affairs eHome. Many parents are not getting their newborn’s unabridged birth certificate and identification document in order early enough. Therefore, they are not eligible for child support payments from the government.

After you have been through Home Affairs, you must visit the upgraded SASSA service portal to make an appointment. You do this online but then you visit a SASSA branch in-person. Be sure to bring the following documents with you:

  • Valid identity documents of both the applicant (child) and spouse (if married).
  • Proof of marital status (via a marriage, birth or death certificate of your spouse).
  • Official birth certificate and ID of the child you’re applying for support for.
  • Proof of income (of both you and your spouse).
  • An approved three-month bank statement (no more than three-months old).
  • Proof of address (a utility statement with your name on it that’s not more the three-months old).

Note that someone may apply on your behalf if you’re unable to visit a SASSA branch office personally. You will need a doctor’s note explaining why and have all of the above documents signed and certified by a commissioner of oaths.

Also, applications can take up to three months to be processed, however, you will be back-paid to the date of your application when approved. Plus, the agency reminds beneficiaries that payments may take between 2-3 days to reflect in your bank account.
