- UDM’s motion to remove Nonhlanhla Ncube accused her of failing to prevent over R100-million in irregular spending.
- Councillor Remington Mazibuko said Ncube’s failures have helped enable looting and denied residents basic services.
The United Democratic Movement (UDM) wants the chairperson of the Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC) at the Inkosi Mtubatuba Local Municipality to be removed from her position.
The party has accused Nonhlanhla Ncube of failing to stop wasteful spending and of allowing corruption to flourish under her leadership.
An internal audit report tabled on 7 March exposed serious problems.
After that, the UDM – which holds one seat in the council – submitted a motion of no confidence against her.
They say Ncube has not led the committee properly and that it missed its meeting targets.
UDM councillor Remington Mazibuko said the committee failed to stop the misuse of public money by politicians and their friends.
“It failed to monitor and prevent the Unauthorised, Irregular, Fruitless and Wasteful Expenditure (UIFWE), which has placed the municipality among the top 10 offenders in the province,” he said.
Mazibuko said Ncube has ignored her duties and cannot do the job.
“She is enabling the looting of public funds and stopping residents from getting proper services,” he said.
He added that the auditor general’s report from 9 December showed that MPAC failed to take any action to stop financial waste.
An outside accounting firm also blamed the municipality’s poor cash flow and missed payments to Sars for the problem.
The firm found overspending on salaries and running costs with no action taken against those responsible.
In the 2021/22 financial year, the municipality wasted R15,519. The waste rose to R120,748 in 2022/23 and shot up to R1,072,765 in 2023/24.
Irregular spending added up to R100,208,802, with another R15,892,562 in unauthorised costs.
Despite this, the UDM’s motion failed because it didn’t win enough support from other political parties.
When Scrolla.Africa contacted Ncube for comment, she said she was not aware of the reports or the motion against her.
