The 30th South African Music Awards (SAMAs) celebrated South Africa’s music industry by honouring some of the best talents in the industry at the Gallagher Convention Centre on Saturday.
TYLA, KABZA DE SMALL AND MTHUNZI WINS BIG AT THE SAMAS
Tyla, Kabza De Small and Mthunzi were some of the biggest winners at the awards ceremony.
However, Tyla, who had her shot to fame in 2023, won four awards but missed one of the night’s biggest awards.
However, in absentia, Tyla won Female Artist of the Year, Newcomer of the Year and Best Pop Album for her self-titled debut album. She also received the International Achievement Award.
However, Kabza De Small’s collaborative album, ‘Isimo,’ with Mthunzi, also won big. It won the Sampra Album of the Year Award.
The song also saw the two winning Radio 200 Duo/Group of the Year. They also scooped the Motsweding FM Best Amapiano Album of the Year.
Despite being one of the best songs in the world, Tyla’s big hit, ‘Water,’ failed to win the coveted Record of the Year award.
Despite ‘Water’ winning big in several global awards, Paris by Mthandeni SK featuring Lwah Ndlunkulu won the Record of the Year Award.
RAPPER CASSPER NYOVEST REACTS
However, South African rapper Cassper Nyovest feels Tyla deserves the award.
Taking to X, formerly Twitter, the muso posted, “No ways. Tyla won a Grammy for Water bro, but she didn’t get the Sama for Record of the Year at home? Haha, y’all are playing games.”
The post no doubt left SA divided, with some claiming that she deserved the award while others lauded that she is not popular in South Africa, hence the miss.
Cassper Nyovest’s followers quickly flooded his comments section with their two cents.
One user commented, “We are not her audience; she sings for Americans, not us. Have you ever heard anyone bumping Water on their way to the carwash? Like kids don’t even jump when that song plays.”
Another user said, “Lol, did that song ever chart back home though? Paris had a run, to be honest, both on the radio and the streets.” However, others praised the SAMAs for not being biased.
CELEBRATING PROUDLY SOUTH AFRICAN-THEMED FASHION
However, in addition to honouring the best music acts, the awards also celebrated local culture and tradition, with many guests wearing South African-themed fashion.
Some notable figures who attended the awards include Ringo Madlingozi, Skwatta Kamp, Rebecca Malope, and Grammy winner Wouter Kellerman.
Several celebrities graced the red carpet with designs by local designers such as Imprint, AFI, and Naked Ape.
On the other hand, other celebrities, including Minnie Dlamini, dazzled in stunning outfits that celebrate South African heritage.
