Donald Trump‘s administration is preparing to bring the first group of white South Africans to the United States as early as next week, according to the New York Times (NYT).
In February, the US President issued an executive order to resettle Afrikaners, citing them as “victims of unjust racial discrimination.” Additionally, Trump decided to suspend financial aid to South Africa after the government passed the Expropriation Bill.
Trump’s administration to bring white South Africans
While Trump halted nearly all other refugee admissions shortly after taking office in January, his administration has developed a programme to allow white South Africans, classified as “refugees,” to relocate to the United States of America (USA).
Just last month, the US leader skipped the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, claiming that South Africa was confiscating land from white farmers and committing acts of genocide.
“The administration plans to send government officials to Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia for an event marking the arrival of the South Africans, who belong to the white minority Afrikaner ethnic group, according to the memo from the Department of Health and Human Services. The administration initially planned to welcome the Afrikaners on Monday, but some officials familiar with the matter cautioned that the plans remained in flux, subject to flight logistics and processing of the group,” the NYT reported.
According to The Guardian, a total of 54 white Afrikaners from South Africa would be met by officials from Trump’s office on Monday at the Dulles International Airport.
In January, Trump suspended the US refugee programme, leaving more than 100,000 approved individuals stranded after fleeing war and persecution from countries such as the DR Congo and Afghanistan.
