Trouble for Mokwena at Wydad — Kaizer Chiefs move next?

Rulani Mokwena to Kaizer Chiefs, imagine the scenes. It wouldn’t be believable until one saw him on the FNB Stadium sideline directing Wandile Duba, Inacio Miguel and Mduduzi Shabalala.

Mokwena left Mamelodi Sundowns last offseason after four illustrious years to join Wydad Athletic Club. The club is chasing its first trophy since that remarkable 2021/22 campaign, during which it claimed its third Champions League and twenty-second Moroccan Championship.

The 38-year-old’s spell in North Africa is under threat following four successive draws, which have many of the club’s executives questioning his effectiveness. According to reports, an emergency meeting focused on Mokwena’s future at the club is set to take place.

Wydad is third on the log – seventeen points behind league leaders RSB Berkane – with eleven wins, ten draws (ouch), and four defeats.

Is Kaizer Chiefs really an option?

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi is facing similar pressures, and unlike Mokwena, has more league losses than wins to his name.

As crazy as it sounds, a Mokwena firing could prompt the Glamour Boys to part ways with Nabi in order to land the four-time PSL-winning coach. Kaizer Chiefs management is reportedly losing patience with the Tunisian’s progress, with some high-profile figures having called for his exit back in January following their defeat to Golden Arrows.

“It’s getting hard and tougher for the management team now,” SoccerLaduma reported

“It’s believed that they thought by now the results would have started to show as the coach came with high expectations, but things are not working according to plan,

“Apparently, that’s what is not making them happy. They don’t just want the team to play well. No. They want results and so far they [Kaizer Chiefs] have lost to the all so-called big teams,

“That’s the other reason why management is not happy so as they feel they have given him enough time to show what he can do for the team. They think and believe that they have a great squad which can easily compete and be up there among Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates,

“Because they are failing to do that, it’s why management is dissatisfied and unhappy with the results and the coach right now.”
