Former Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs defender Neil Tovey has criticised Amakhosi’s season, even though they lifted their first trophy in ten years.

Chiefs’ 0-0 draw with Polokwane City on Saturday in the Betway Premiership means they have failed to qualify for the MTN8 for the second season in a row.
Chiefs ‘have been poor’
Amakhosi cannot finish higher than ninth in the table. But head coach Nasreddine Nabi defended his side in the wake of Saturday’s result. Nabi’s main point was that his side had improved, because they had won the Nedbank Cup.
“Chiefs have been poor, to be honest. In football, you are judged by your league position,” Tovey told kickoff.com, however, with his comments actually coming before Saturday’s result.
“Given the stature of Chiefs, they should be a top three team, yet here they are in 9th place. That’s really disappointing.
“It’s not good at all. Many can be held accountable for this, including the players and the coaching staff,” the legend added.
“Yes, they won a trophy for the first time in 10 years, which is unusual for Chiefs. Typically, they don’t go more than one or two years without a trophy.
“However, winning a trophy doesn’t equate to having a good season. You will ultimately be judged by your league position. Consistency is key.”
Johnson echoes Tovey
Former Kaizer Chiefs head coach Cavin Johnson, meanwhile, has echoed Tovey’s sentiments. Johnson was sacked by Chiefs at the end of last season, with Nabi coming in to replace him.

“As far as Kaizer Chiefs are concerned, I do believe that with the signings they made this season and the fact that they brought a new technical team, they should have done better than what they have done… than what they achieved this season,” Johnson said at a recent La Liga event in Melrose Arch.
