Top five places to visit in Durban this summer

Famous for its subtropical weather and the warm Indian Ocean, Durban is surely the best place to be this summer. Whether you enjoy being on the water or connecting with nature, the city of Sun, Sea and Fun has got you covered. Here are the five places that you can explore in Durban this summer…

USHAKA MARINE WORLD 

    If you love sharks, dolphins and anything in the underwater world, then Ushaka Marine is the place to be. According to holidify.com, its aquarium has engaging exhibits where you can learn about marine life.

    There is also a Dolphin and Seal show where you and your loved ones can watch them playing in the water.

    Apart from being an aquarium, uShaka is a water park with various pools, water slides and the famous Lazy River.

    uShaka also has its Dangerous Creatures World where you can explore different types of wildlife creatures such as snakes, lizards, Gila monsters and more. 

    And if it happens that you tummy is rumbling for food while enjoying exploring the theme park, you do not have to walk long distances to the shops for food, as the famous water park has a range of shops, restaurants and cafés located in the Village Walk.

    MITCHELL PARK ZOO

      Located in Morningside, Florida Road, Mitchell Park is a zoo that is home to many animals. It is a wonderful place for a person or family that wants to explore the animal world or even have a picnic. 

      The zoo has many facilities, including a mini zoo that features animals like crocodiles, monkeys, tortoises and a variety of birds. The zoo has notable animals including an ancient tortoise named Admiral, who came to the zoo in 1915, and an Indian elephant named Nelie who arrived in 1928, can crack coconuts with her feet. 

      There are picnic lawns, braai areas, a jungle gym, a Blue Zoo tea garden and a bandstand venue that can be booked for any event at a fee of R130 for four hours. If you are looking for snacks and sweets, Alley’s Snacks has you covered. The zoo is also Wheelchair friendly.

      VALLEY OF A THOUSAND HILLS 

        If you are looking for a more nature-reserved and calm space away from the loud and polluted city, then the Valley of a Thousand Hills is the perfect getaway to the green side of Durban. A ride through the green mountains and Umgeni River is one not to be missed.

        An exploration of the Zulu village will give you an insight into the culture and history of one of Africa’s most famous tribes. Some adventurous activities include rock climbing, mountain biking at Giba Gorge Mountain Bike Park and more activities that will require your physical strength. 

        DURBAN BOTANICAL GARDENS

          If you are looking for a picnic-friendly area, the Botanical Gardens is the best place. It is one of the oldest botanical gardens in Africa. In the garden, you can explore the Orchid House, tea garden and herbarium. You can find animals such as birds, ducks, frogs etc. 

          Entry to the garden is free of charge, however, if you decide to take a guided tour, be prepared to pay.

          SUNCOAST CASINO

            Gambling and casino champions, this one’s for you. Suncoast Casino is one of South Africa’s best casinos. It is a great place for those who enjoy the nighttime and nightlife. It has gambling slots and live shows daily. There is also an entertainment centre with a cinema, restaurants and even a private beach where you can relax in the sand overlooking, the beautiful Indian Ocean.
