The 2024 tax return deadline is upon us. For months we’ve been talking about Monday 21 October 2024 and submitting early to avoid complications. And just like that, the day is here. If you’re the type of person who leaves things right to the last moment, congratulations, today is as late as it possibly gets. But you don’t want to face any late-submission penalties

The South African Revenue Service is confident the SARS eFiling portal will not become overloaded under the strain of last-minute submissions. So, if you’re one of the tardy South African taxpayers who has not yet filed ahead of the 2024 tax return deadline, we’ll run you through a few basics to get you over the line before time runs out …

SUBMIT VIA YOUR SMARTPHONE

The MobiApp is available to download from all app stores. Image: File

EFiling is by far the most popular system used, but there is also the SARS MobiApp you can access on your smart device. This is a mobile-friendly channel from which you can submit your Income Tax Return (ITR12) in just a few minutes. It is available from the Apple App Store, Google Play Store and Huawei App Gallery. Download, register, complete and double check your tax return – SARS says this shouldn’t take more than 15 minutes. One you’re happy you can save and submit for evaluation.

Even if you’re using the SARS eFiling website, the MobiApp still allows you to reset your username and password and update registered details. You can upload and submit supporting documents, make a payment to SARS or set-up a Call Back from the SARS Contact Centre. Critically, you may also view a Notice of Assessment, request and view your Income Tax Statement of Account, check on the status of your return and request a Statement of Account (SOA), amongst other things.

SARS EFILING

If you’re late, the SARS eFiling website or SARS MobiApp are your best bet. Image: File

SARS eFiling is unarguably the most popular way to tackle the 2024 tax return deadline. Simply register HERE, follow the prompts and complete your return. If you’re struggling, you call the SARS Contact Centre on 0800 00 7277 and make an appointment to file electronically. This is in case you don’t have access to the internet or a smart device and need the assistance of a SARS agent. But just make sure to bring along all your supporting documentation and that your appointment is confirmed. Only registered SARS eFiling users can make an appointment.

If you need to confirm your individual tax number, change banking details and/or reset your password, contact SARS urgently on 0800 00 7277 (SARS). The centre is open between 08h00-17h00.
