South Africans are mourning the loss of one of the country’s most respected actors, Presley Chweneyagae, who passed away on Tuesday, 27 May, at the age of 40.

Known for his powerful performances in Tsotsi, iNumber Number, The River, and 90 Plein Street, Chweneyagae left behind a legacy of excellence in film and television.

He was laid to rest on Saturday, 7 June, during an emotional funeral service attended by friends, colleagues, and family members.

Among those who paid tribute to the late actor was his close friend MV Sgudla, who delivered a deeply moving speech recalling the final moments of Presley’s life.

Sgudla revealed that he was by Chweneyagae’s side when he took his last breath.

“I have no words to say how hurt I am. I had to experience the last moment of his passing; I was with him. I was with the paramedics; I was on the scene,” he shared.

His words, captured in a video later posted by the SABC, painted a heartbreaking picture of that day.

“To see you, my friend, leaving in the manner in which you left broke my heart,” he added, paying tribute to a bond cut short far too soon.

The Chweneyagae family confirmed that Presley died from natural causes, adding that there was no foul play involved.

According to the family, paramedics were called to assist when the actor began having difficulty breathing.
