Former finance minister and Reserve Bank governor Tito Mboweni has passed away at the age of 65.

His family confirmed that he died on Saturday following a short illness.

The family said in a statement: “It is with deep sadness that the Mboweni Family announces the passing of former Reserve Bank governor and minister of finance Tito Titus Mboweni.

“He passed away in hospital in Johannesburg on Saturday night surrounded by his loved ones.”

ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula paid tribute to Mboweni: “I extend my deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late Comrade Tito Mboweni. His passing is a profound loss for South Africa, as he was a dedicated public servant who was crucial in shaping the country’s economic policies.

“As the first black Governor of the South African Reserve Bank, Mboweni’s leadership, intellect, and unwavering commitment to the nation left an indelible mark on our country.”

Mboweni became Nelson Mandela’s first labour minister in 1994, a role he held until 1999. He later became governor of the Reserve Bank in 1999, replacing Dr Chris Stals.

In recent years, Mboweni embraced a simpler life, enjoying farming and sharing his modest cooking skills on social media, where he became known for his chicken and pilchards in tomato sauce.
