“Are we becoming a retirement village? It feels like we are turning into an old age home,” Gqosha remarked.
At 31 years old, Lorch is approaching the latter stages of his football career. Gqosha questioned whether Kaizer Chiefs could effectively build a team around players in their 30s, despite their experience.
“You must invest in youngsters when building a team,” Gqosha emphasized. “I’m not questioning Lorch’s abilities, but at his age, how long can he maintain his form?”
Risk of short-term solutions
Gqosha also warned about the potential downside of signing older players like Lorch. While Lorch’s talent is undeniable, the former Amakhosi defender worries that in two years, the team could find themselves back at square one.
“Is it possible to build a team with players who are 30 years old and above? I understand the need for experience, but are they not satisfied with the experienced players they already have?”
He further added, “As a player myself, I would take advantage of such opportunities because it’s a chance to earn money. Yet, at the same time, there may be a strong desire to play and prove critics wrong, which complicates the situation.”
“It’s a definite no for me”
Gqosha made it clear that he doesn’t believe Lorch’s signing would address Kaizer Chiefs’ long-term challenges.
“Ultimately, I don’t believe that such a signing would help solve Kaizer Chiefs’ problems. For me, it’s a definite ‘no.’”
