Thailand wants to implement shorter stays
The popular travel destination of Thailand may soon only allow visa-free stays for a maximum of 30 days, down from the current 60.
This, according to Euronews, is due to an increasing number of tourists exploiting the waiver to carry out illegal business activities in the country.
Some of these illegal activities includes foreigners working or conducting businesses illegally, as well condos and apartments being illegally rented out.
By chopping the number of visa-free days in half, the Thai government said that it hoped to limit the misuse of this waiver period without truly damaging tourism.
Thailand’s Tourism and Sports Minister, Sorawong Thienthong, revealed that the proposal has already gained support from several ministries, although a formal decision will only be made once the details are finalised.
Visa-free entry expands to include South Africa
Just last year, Thailand expanded its visa-free entry scheme to 93 countries and territories as it sought to revitalise its tourism industry.
And one of those 93 countries was South Africa, one of only nine African nations. The other African countries were: Zambia, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Namibia, and the Seychelles.
Previously, passport holders from only 57 countries were allowed to enter without a visa.
Thailand is a already a popular holiday destination for South Africans, as it offers a mix of vibey city life, stunning beaches, and rich cultural experiences.
Many South Africans are drawn to Thailand’s affordability, warm hospitality, and diverse cuisine, and the country’s Visa-free policy also makes travel to the nation very convenient.
