KwaZulu-Natal – ANC chair Siboniso Duma is angry with ANC members who flaunt expensive alcohol and food on social media.

“There’s nothing that requires you to post your expensive food and alcohol to prove you’re close to leadership,” Duma told members at a meeting in Pietermaritzburg.

He said some comrades who get government tenders have a propensity to brag on social media about their expensive lifestyle, which hurts the ANC’s image.

“Even if you go to the poorest branches, you’re not expected to come with expensive clothes. You need to humble yourself and wear clothes that connect with people on the ground,” he said.

Duma said the party needs to get back to its roots. They want members to think about the ANC’s goals, not their own interests.

“We have agreed that for the ANC to live forever, we must take renewal to heart – live by it – live through it,” he said. “Only a renewed ANC can win back people’s confidence.”

The party is getting stricter about new members too. ANC political school head David Makhura said last week that people who want to join must now write motivational letters explaining why they want to be part of the ANC.
