Bestselling author Stephen King has urged the Academy to cancel the 2025 Oscars, citing the devastating impact of wildfires in Los Angeles.
STEPHEN KING’S CALL TO CANCEL THE OSCARS
These blazes, some of the worst in California’s history, have already claimed at least 25 lives. The fires have also displaced thousands, and destroyed homes and businesses.
King, 77, expressed his stance on Bluesky, writing, “IMHO they should cancel them. No glitz with Los Angeles on fire.”
His post, liked over 45,000 times, sparked debate among fans, according to Deadline.
STEPHEN KING’S SUPPORTERS AND NAYSAYERS
While some agree with King’s call for sensitivity, others believe the Oscars could boost morale and aid recovery efforts.
One follower commented, “The Oscars could raise funds and lift spirits. The arts matter, in good times and bad.”
Another argued, “Cancelling hurts workers. Many rely on Oscars-related events for income—drivers, servers, glam teams, and more.”
The Academy has taken steps to address the crisis.
THE OSCARS EVENT
It cancelled its nominees’ luncheon, reallocating R4.7 million from the event to wildfire relief efforts, according to News Week.
This raised its total contribution to R18.8 million. The Oscar awards nominations announcement, originally set for mid-January, was also postponed to 23 January.
However, the main ceremony, hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien, remains scheduled for 2 March at the Dolby Theatre.
In a joint statement, Academy leaders Bill Kramer and Janet Yang said, “We’re devastated by the fires’ impact.
This tragedy has united our film community, and we’re committed to supporting those affected. We’ll honour frontline workers and encourage global relief efforts.”
The fires have disrupted Hollywood’s awards season. The Critics Choice Awards and Producers Guild nominations were delayed.
Netflix postponed the premiere of Love, Meghan, a series featuring the Duchess of Sussex, from 15 January to 4 March.
Meghan Markle, who volunteered alongside her husband Prince Harry, said, “We must focus on those affected by the fires in my home state.”
WILDFIRE VICTIMS
Several celebrities have personally felt the disaster’s wrath. Stars like Mel Gibson, Jeff Bridges, and Jennifer Garner lost their homes, according to Variety.
Paris Hilton donated R1.87 million to a relief fund after witnessing her Malibu house “burn to the ground on live TV.”
Jennifer Garner, along with chef José Andrés, distributed food to evacuees through World Central Kitchen.
The wildfires have deeply scarred local communities. British-born former child star Rory Sykes tragically died of carbon monoxide poisoning, according to his mother. She described his loss as “needless and heartbreaking.”
STEPHEN KING’S PLEA
King’s call to cancel the Oscars resonates with themes of solidarity during crises. Disasters, whether fires or floods, demand empathy and action.
Some argue that cancelling a glamorous event shows respect. Others believe using such platforms to rally support can make a difference.
As debate rages, Los Angeles struggles to recover. The Oscars might still happen, but the devastation underscores the fragility of life. For now, Hollywood’s brightest night feels dimmed by a sombre reality.
