The State has urged the Pretoria High Court to deny bail to a 41-year-old Congolese bouncer from Zanzou nightclub, arguing he poses a flight risk.
The accused was arrested last month after a viral video showed young men being sexually violated at the club.
His lawyers claim he should be granted bail to support his family, citing his temporary asylum seeker permit expiring in July.
However, according to EWN, prosecutor Liana Bosman countered that he entered South Africa illegally in 2012 and only obtained the permit in February 2024, suggesting he could flee trial the same way he entered.
The court will deliver its bail ruling next Wednesday.

The media still can’t take visuals of him or name him because more victims are coming forward and he needs to be taken through more identity parades. @ewnreporter pic.twitter.com/9rDHdDKM3D
