President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, Gwede Mantashe, as the Acting President of South Africa.

The appointment is effective from 18 to 22 May 2025.

Constitutional provision invoked

The appointment was made in accordance with Section 90(1)(b) of the Constitution, which allows the president to designate a Cabinet member to act as president when both the president and deputy president are unavailable.

This decision comes as South Africa President Ramaphosa and Deputy President Paul Mashatile are both away on simultaneous working visits.

Ramaphosa is visiting the United States, while Mashatile is in France.
