Siyabonga Ndlovu, the IFP mayor of eNdumeni municipality, who faces a vote of no confidence for allegedly sleeping and snoring during council meetings, is safe for now.
This comes after the postponement of a council meeting that was due to take place last week.
At that meeting, the council was supposed to vote on a motion to remove Ndlovu, who was accused of taking naps and snoring during official gatherings.
The Democratic Alliance filed the motion and also claimed that Ndlovu cost the municipality over R400,000 in petrol last month.
Lucky Khumalo, the ANC secretary of the Inkosi Bambatha region, said: “The council has not been convened, and we are told that it might take place at the end of this month.”
The ANC has also filed a motion of no confidence against the council’s speaker, Andile Nsibande, whom they accused of delaying the council meeting to protect the mayor.
Nsibande has previously denied the allegation, but he was not available to comment on the council meeting that was supposed to happen last week or the vote of no confidence against the mayor.
Sources in eNdumeni claim that the motion is meant to silence Ndlovu over his decision to investigate various troubling issues in the municipality.
