Airplanes are an everyday part of modern life, but there are many hidden facts about them that most passengers never even realise. From the safest seats to shocking hygiene, here are seven surprising things about planes that might change the way you see flying.
1. The air inside is drier than a desert
Ever noticed how your skin feels dry and your throat scratchy after a long flight? That’s because the air inside an plane cabin has a humidity level of around 10-20%, which is even lower than the Sahara Desert. The dry air can dehydrate you quickly, so it’s always a good idea to drink plenty of water while flying.
2. Oxygen masks only last 12-15 minutes
If the oxygen masks ever drop during a flight, don’t panic – they’re designed to keep you safe while the pilot rapidly descends to a breathable altitude. The 12- to 15-minute supply is more than enough for the aircraft to reach a safe level where passengers can breathe normally again.
3. The rear seats are the safest
Though no seat on a plane is 100% safe in an accident, studies suggest that passengers sitting in the back have a higher survival rate in crashes compared to those in the front. If safety is your priority, choosing a seat toward the rear of the plane might be a good idea.
5. Airplane tyres don’t pop on landing
Despite the intense force of a landing, plane tyres are designed to withstand extreme pressure – up to 38 tons of weight. These tyres are also inflated to about 200 psi, which is six times the pressure of a car tire. And when they do need replacing, mechanics don’t change them after every landing – plane tyres can handle hundreds of landings before being swapped out.
6. The black box isn’t actually black
Every commercial aircraft is equipped with a flight recorder, commonly known as the “black box.” However, it’s not actually black – it’s bright orange to make it easier to find in the event of a crash. These recorders are built to survive extreme heat, water pressure, and impacts, making them one of the most durable pieces of equipment on the plane.
7. Your tray table is dirtier than the toilet
If you think the bathroom is the germiest place on the plane, think again! Studies have found that tray tables often have more bacteria than the toilet flush button. Since they aren’t always cleaned between flights, it’s a good idea to bring disinfecting wipes and clean your tray before eating.
