City Power has announced a planned power outage for maintenance at the Gresswold Substation on Saturday, 22 February. The electricity supply will be interrupted from 8:00 to 15:00, impacting numerous Johannesburg suburbs.

Suburbs to be affected by the power outage

Residents in the following areas will experience the planned power outage: Wynberg 1 & 2, Wynberg East and West, Wynberg/Kew, Kew South and West, Kew/Bramley View, Glenhazel, Glenhazel South, Rembrandt Park, Lombardy East, Bramley Gardens/Kew, Linksfield North Extension 7, Bramley Park/Athol, Silvamont, Lyndhurst East, Crystal Gardens, and Sunningdale/Rembrandt Park.

City Power stated that a power outage is necessary for essential maintenance as part of efforts to enhance service delivery. The utility urged customers to treat all electrical outlets live, as supply could be restored earlier than planned.

“We regret any inconvenience this outage may cause,” City Power said.

Alexandra Service Suspension Following Technician Assault

In an unrelated matter, City Power has indefinitely suspended services in Alexandra after a technician was violently assaulted by residents during a protest on Tuesday, 18 February. The incident occurred at the Alexandra Service Delivery Centre while the technician responded to a power outage affecting 2nd and 7th Avenue.

The utility expressed outrage over the attack, describing it as a gross violation of the rights and safety of our employees. City Power confirmed that no staff would be dispatched to Alexandra until the area is deemed safe for workers.

“We strongly condemn this criminal action,” City Power stated.

Plea for Cooperation

City Power called on residents to protest peacefully and consider the consequences of their actions. The utility emphasised that disruptions to services in Alexandra are necessary to protect its employees.

“While we respect the community’s right to protest, we urge residents to consider the implications of their actions,” the utility added.

How should communities balance raising their concerns with ensuring the safety of service workers?
