‘SASSA is slowing aid relief in Cape Town’

Cape Town is grappling with a dramatic surge in weather-related disasters, with over 30 000 incidents reported between July and December 2024.

This is a staggering 200% increase from the previous year. Fires too have increased in both formal and informal settlements.

The City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre (DRMC) is responsible for mitigating the risk of these disasters, whether natural or man-made.

The DRMC is also tasked with responding to the impact of these events.

SASSA slowing disaster response

Nearly 90 000 people required assistance during the six month period in 2024, the City said in a statement. This figure is triple that of 2023.

“We commend the DRMC, NGOs and other partners who stepped up…however, the current model is unsustainable,” said the City’s Mayco Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

“When SASSA decided to take direct control of humanitarian relief seven years ago, we raised a concern that it would slow down the provision of aid to those in need during times of disaster.”

“That is exactly what has transpired.”

The City believes that decentralising aid provision will allow municipalities to act quickly and more efficiently during and after weather disasters.

Winter is coming

With another harsh winter looming, the City’s Winter Readiness Task Team has been meeting bi-weekly since February.

On top of that, the Disaster Risk Management Advisory Forum will soon receive a seasonal outlook briefing from the South African Weather Service.

“Last winter proved one of our most challenging on record,” Smith added. “The City is doing all it can to mitigate the potential impacts this year.”

“I want to urge the public to ensure that their properties and environment are adequately secured, and to support the City’s donation drives.”
