- SACP now wants the MK to help run KZN with ANC after earlier calling them criminals and enemies.
- The change comes after SACP failed to get seats and former KZN Premier Willies Mchunu joined MK.
The South African Communist Party (SACP) in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) has changed its stance on the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK) and now says it should help run the province with the African National Congress (ANC).
This is a shift from their position on 5 June, when they warned the ANC not to work with MK, labelling them “a mafia group and state capture criminals.”
At the time, the SACP called MK an enemy of progress. But on Saturday, Provincial Secretary Themba Mthembu struck a different note.
“The MKP should be in charge of the KZN government. I refuse to call this arrangement a government of provincial unity. How could it be a government of unity where a party with 45% is outside?
“They even claim that this government is the will of the people. This is not true. This is a coalition of the multi-party, not the will of the people, but the will of the capital,” said Mthembu.
The SACP leaders changed their view after failing to secure seats in the KZN legislature following the general elections.
They are now angry that the ANC formed a government with the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and the Democratic Alliance (DA) without consulting their alliance partners.
Mthembu claims the ANC is now merely a puppet in the government with no real power.
The SACP’s newfound support for MK follows the defection of their veteran member and former KZN premier Willies Mchunu, who left the ANC to join MK as its provincial leader.
