Democratic Alliance (DA) federal chairperson Helen Zille stated that South Africa is in a better state now than it was during apartheid.

In a recent appearance on the Podcast and Chill, the former DA leader explained her controversial tweet from 2017, which sparked significant outrage.

Zille had tweeted that the legacy of colonialism was not “only negative,” arguing that it contributed to the establishment of an independent judiciary and the provision of piped water.

“For those claiming legacy of colonialism was ONLY negative, think of our independent judiciary, transport infrastructure, piped water,” Helen Zille wrote on X (Twitter) six years ago.

During the podcast, Macgyver Mukwevho (MagG) discussed the controversial tweet made by the former Western Cape mayor.

Helen Zille speaks on colonialism tweets

“Do you still believe South Africa was better under Apartheid?” he said

“When did I say that?” Zille responded.

“This is a total 100 percent lie, I will give you a million rand if you can find a tweet where I said the country was better under apartheid. The country was much better after apartheid and even under Jacob Zuma, the country was better than under apartheid,” he said.

“It’s just ridiculous how you say one perfectly honest thing that is true and it grows legs and arms and horns and devils’ tails…nonsense.”

Helen Zille said that her tweets were taken out of context.

“I said the legacy of colonialism is not only negative. Obviously, it means a lot was negative but let’s keep the stuff that wasn’t. Formal education is a legacy, hospitals are a legacy, and electricity generation is a legacy,” she said.
