Rulani Mokwena could be set for a sensational return to Orlando Pirates as a replacement for outgoing Jose Riveiro.
It is public knowledge that Riveiro will not be extending his stay with Pirates when his current contract expire in June.
Also, Mokwena will not be staying with Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club beyond the current campaign.
RULANI MOKWENA COULD RETURN TO ORLANDO PIRATES
Now, The South African has gathered that talks are ongoing between Mokwena and Pirates for next season and beyond.
Should the two parties striker a deal, Mokwena would return to the Soweto giants for the first time since 2020.
He first joined Pirates from Mamelodi Sundowns as an assistant to Micho Sredojevic in 2017.
And following Sredojevic’s abrupt departure from Pirates in August 2020, Mokwena stepped in as interim coach.
He led Pirates in 14 competitive matches before he was demoted back to the position of assistant coach.
At the time, Mokwena worked alongside Fadlu Davids under German mentor Josef Zinnbauer who was appointed in December 2020.
While Mokwena’s future as a coach looked gloomy at the time as he had to go back to Sundowns to work Mosimane, he soon became a co-coach.
This was in October 2020 following Pitso Mosimane’s departure to Al Ahly. Mokwena worked alongside Manqoba Mngqithi and Steve Komphela.
The now 38-year-old became a sole head coach for Sundowns between 2022 and 2024.
He delivered two league titles and fell short of reaching the CAF Champions League final as Sundowns were twice knocked out in the semifinals.
Mokwena then moved to Wydad on a three-year deal after he was sacked by Sundowns.
However, the work relationship with Wydad is expected to come to an end as the Moroccans are not happy with him.
But Pirates are willing to give him a second bite at a cherry five years since his departure to try and continue from where Riveiro would have left off.
