Rulani Mokwena escorted by security after another loss

Wydad Athletic Club head coach Rulani Mokwena had to be escorted out of the stadium by security after his side suffered a 1-0 defeat to 10-man RS Berkane on Saturday.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns joined Wydad in July hoping to turn the club’s fortunes. The Moroccan giants finished sixth last season and Rulani’s mandate is to bring the club back to the top. Going into the game, Wydad were just three points behind log leaders Bekane.

Wydad looked likely to win after Berkane’s Mateus Santos was sent off. Mokwena’s team failed to capitalise and in the 75th minute, they were punished by Ayoub Khairi, who scored the only goal of the

Wydad remained seventh with 11 points from eight games, while Berkane moved to 17 points. Rulani Mokwena is definitely under pressure and Wydad fans want him out of the club.

The former Sundowns coach has just won three out of eight league matches so far.

“I see it a lot, especially in Morocco, where coaches of the teams are a little bit tense. I can see the body language that a lot of the coaches are afraid to lose,” Rulani Mokwena said earlier in the week.

“In difficult times we have to be a family like it says at the back of our shirt, and when you’re a family we lose together because we cry together, we don’t eat when we don’t win believe me.”

Time will tell if Rulani Mokwena will survive another month as Wydad coach. The club is desperate to return to the top and compete in the CAF Champions League.
