Orlando Pirates have reportedly tabled a two-year extension for frontman Tshegofatso Mabasa.
The former Royal AM forward needs eight goals to reach Benedict Vilakazi’s elusive 52-goal club record. It hasn’t been the most prolific season for the reigning PSL Golden Boot winner, netting a meagre five goals in seventeen league games.
With eleven games remaining (and nine goals needed), it’s unlikely that Mabasa will become Orlando Pirates’ leading-scorer before the season concludes. However, with an additional two years in Soweto cemented, it’s more of a when not if.
Contract talks confirmed
“As we speak now, his contract will run until June 2027,” SoccerLaduma reported.
“The club has already exercised the two years on his contract. It’s not a direct extension or a new contract. For now, they have taken up the option they had on the player, and that’s within their rights to do so. His previous contract was coming to an end in June this year.”
Champions League next
Orlando Pirates arrived in Algeria before tomorrow’s quarter-final clash against MC Alger. It’s been thirty years since the Buccaneers added a star to their crest – this is arguably their best opportunity yet.
The Soweto giants welcomed Monnapule Saleng back to training, prompting speculation of a Champions League feature, which has since been ruled out. Sorry, Orlando Pirates fans.
“He didn’t travel with the team,” a SoccerLaduma source confirmed. “I would be lying if I say I know when he will be back on the field, but not in this one – it’s highly unlikely.”
Is Mabasa an Orlando Pirates legend?
