Last year The South African reported that Qantas was set to begin direct flights between Joburg and Western Australia’s capital by mid-2025.
The airline has confirmed that flights on this route will begin on 7 December 2025. Bookings are now open.
“The opportunity now exists to take more South Africans to Australia, with a direct flight proposition, as well as bring Australians to South Africa,” said Michi Messner, Qantas Regional Manager for Africa.
“It does support the demand on the route given the fact that Australia has so many South African expats in the region (around 200 000) and it opens up more opportunities for visiting friends and family, plus for corporate and leisure travel.”
The Perth–Johannesburg flight enables further access to Cape Town through domestic South African airlines.
Qantas has flown between South Africa and Australia since 1952 and currently operates a long-haul route from Johannesburg to Sydney.
Until now, only South African Airways has offered direct flights between Johannesburg and Perth.
What are the new flight times?
Flight QF65 will depart Perth on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 13h30, and arrive in Johannesburg at 18h45 the same day (adjusting for time difference).
On the same days, flight QF66 will leave Johannesburg at 21h35, and arrive in Perth at 13h30 the following day.

For South Africans travelling to New Zealand, Qantas will also launch new direct flights between Perth and Auckland from 8 December.
These flights will operate on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays and are designed to streamline travel for passengers coming from Joburg.
With both the Johannesburg and Auckland flights operating out of Perth’s Terminals 3 and 4, travellers can make smooth connections without needing an Australian transit visa (as long as their layover is under eight hours).
Both the Johannesburg and Auckland routes will be operated using Airbus A330 aircraft, featuring 27 business-class seats and 224 economy-class seats.
