Kaizer Chiefs have jokingly asked the government to grant South Africans a public holiday on Monday following their Nedbank Cup victory against Orlando Pirates over the weekend.
The win marks the first time in a decade that Amakhosi have ended their “trophy drought” in the local cup competition.
KAIZER CHIEFS APPEAL TO GOVERNMENT
In a post from their official X account, the South African government congratulated Kaizer Chiefs on their victory.
The post read: “Congratulations, Khosi Nation! Kaizer Chiefs finally end their 10-year wait for silverware, defeating fierce rivals Orlando Pirates to lift the 2025 Nedbank Cup.”
Jumping into the comments section was the official Amakhosi X account, who cheekily replied: “S’cel’ iholiday on Monday”. [Please, can we have a holiday on Monday?]
Others agreed that the Chiefs needed to celebrate their win and rub it in the faces of their rivals, too.
WHEN IS THE NEXT PUBLIC HOLIDAY?
While the government is unlikely to grant Kaizer Chiefs their wish, South Africans will have to wait several more weeks for the next public holiday.
Youth Day – 16 June – will fall on a Monday, securing another long weekend for citizens.
SHOULD KAIZER CHIEFS FANS GET A PUBLIC HOLIDAY?
