Police struck a major blow to drug traffickers with the arrest of a 31-year-old driver and the seizure of a truck carrying R50 million worth of crystal meth.

How Did Police Intercept the Suspect Vehicle?

According to the South African Police Services, police achieved a significant breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking during an ongoing Interprovincial Crime-Combat Operation.

Police from the Free State, Western Cape, Eastern Cape, and Northern Cape coordinated efforts to intercept a major drug consignment within 24 hours of the operation.

Captain Loraine Earle, a police spokesperson, stated that, “on the morning of 25 March 2025, at approximately 10:30 AM, Aliwal North Detectives and Crime Intelligence received critical information during a tracing operation.”

“They identified a truck traveling from Smithfield to Aliwal North as a suspected drug transporter. Officers quickly set up a checkpoint at the town’s bridge. Stopped the large freight truck and escorted it for a search,” said Earle.

Discovery of the Drugs

The authorities promptly summoned the K9 Unit and Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC), ensuring they conducted a meticulous inspection of the vehicle.

During the search, a detailed examination uncovered 12 large bags of crystal meth. The drugs weighed 313.5 kg and had an estimated street value of R50 million.

IOL reported that the seizure highlights the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in South Africa.

Police immediately arrested the driver, a 35-year-old man from Gauteng.

The court has scheduled his appearance in the Aliwal North Magistrate’s Court.

He will face charges of drug possession and trafficking.

According to TheCitizen, Eastern Cape MEC Xolile Nqatha praised Aliwal North police for arresting the 35-year-old suspect.

Nqatha noted that this arrest shows the effectiveness of current crime-fighting strategies. “We applaud the Aliwal North police for catching this suspect,” he said.

He added, “In our province, criminals must now understand that if they commit a crime, they will be caught, and our police are ready to defend themselves if necessary.”
