Orlando Pirates are pondering a decision on the future of Nkosinathi Sibisi as his contract is set to expire at the end of June 2025.

Sibisi has been one of the key defenders for the Buccaneers since signing from Golden Arrows at the start of the 2022/23 Betway Premiership campaign. The KZN-born hard-tackler has won five trophies with Pirates after lifting two Nedbank Cup and three MTN8 titles in a row.

Since arriving at Pirates, Sibisi has played 70 matches across all competitions, forming an integral part of the club’s defensive structure.

The 29-year-old has also been a regular in the Bafana Bafana squad under the guidance of Hugo Broos. Sibisi was part of the Bafana squad that returned home with a bronze medal at the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast.

In the current campaign, Sibisi was featured in nine matches in all competitions, including playing in the 2024 MTN8 final against Stellenbosch FC last month. The Soweto giants defeated Stellies 3-1 at Moses Mabhida Stadium to lift the MTN8 trophy.

ORLANDO PIRATES KEEN TO EXERCISE TWO-YEAR OPTION ON SIBISI’S CONTRACT

With Nkosinathi Sibisi entering the last six months of his contract in January 2025, FARPost understands that the Sea Robbers are keen on keeping the centre-back at the club beyond 2025.

The Bafana Bafana international has a two-year option on his contract, and a source close to the information revealed that Pirates could be looking to trigger the option.

“Nkosinathi Sibisi’s contract is expiring in June 2025, but Pirates have the option to renew for a further two years,” a source said.

“Looking at how things are going for Sibisi at Pirates at the moment, I don’t see the team not taking the option on his contract. I mean, he has proven that he’s one of the key figures under Jose Riveiro.”

In the Pirates centre-back position, Bhodlela is competing with Tapelo Xoki, Thabiso Sesane, Sandile Mthethwa, Olisa Ndah and Innocent Maela for a place in the starting line-up.

Meanwhile, Sesane and Sibisi have been the preferred centre-back pairing after a long-term injury to Ndah, who was partnering with Sesane in the first few games of the season.
