Orlando Pirates have extended their lead in the Betway Premiership to six points after a 1-0 victory over Richards Bay on Tuesday evening.
The Buccaneers secured their seventh consecutive victory in the Betway Premiership in what was Jose Riveiro’s 100th game in charge. The Spaniard has won five trophies already in his two years in charge of the Sea Robbers. He has won 61 times, drew 20, and lost 19 matches during his stay.
One thing that Orlando Pirates have missed in the past 12 years is the league title but if they keep bagging more points, they might end their drought. The club has already won the MTN8 for the third successive time this season and the supporters have made it clear that their wish to for the team to lift either the league title or the CAF Champions League.
Makgopa’s goal gives Orlando Pirates three points
So far so good for Jose Riveiro’s men. Besides winning all their seven league games, Pirates are still in the CAF CL. They qualified for the group stages for the first time since 2019. Their biggest test of the season is yet to come when they’ll have to play league and Champions League matches back-to-back.
For now, Orlando Pirates need to bag three points and increase their lead at the top. With Sundowns likely to chase until the end, Riveiro knows at one stage, he might have to make big sacrifices.
