A petition calling for Elon Musk’s Canadian citizenship to be revoked is fast gaining momentum.

The world’s richest man – who was born in Pretoria – boasts three citizenships – South Africa by birth, Canada through his maternal parentage, and the US as a naturalized citizen.

PETITION TO CANCEL ELON MUSK’S CITIZENSHIP CONTINUES TO GROW

In a tweet, the X account @politicalvidchannel revealed that hundreds of thousands of Canadians had signed a petition asking Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to revoke Elon Musk’s Canadian citizenship.

According to the petition, this was due to various reasons, including his role in US President Donald Trump’s administration.

Initiated by Canadian MP Charlie Angus, the petition – signed by close to 400 000 citizens – has stated that Elon has acted against Canada’s national interest and undermined its sovereignty. It also claims that the world’s richest man has used his wealth and power to influence their elections.

The petition calls on Trudeau to revoke Elon Musk’s Canadian citizenship and passport “effective immediately.”

Elon is a South African citizen by birth. At the age of 17, Elon emmigrated to Canada, the country of birth for his mother, Maye. Elon sought solace in the country, allegedly over his bid to avoid joining the Apartheid military service through conscription, which was a mandatory two-year service for white males.

He later moved to the US to pursue studies and work opportunities. In 2002, Elon became a naturalised US citizen.

CAN AND WILL IT HAPPEN?

The petition to revoke Elon Musk’s Canadian citizenship is active until 20 June 2025, after which it could potentially be presented to the House of Commons for debate.

However, it’s unlikely that Elon’s citizenship will be revoked, as the Canadian legislature states that this is only the cause for individuals who commit fraud or misrepresentation.

Immigration lawyer Gabriela Ramo told CBC: “Before they could move to do this, they would need to introduce legislation. There would have to be amendments to the current Citizenship Act.

“There’s no provision that would allow them to pursue revocation of citizenship of a Canadian birth, by virtue of his birth to a Canadian mother.”

WHAT HAS WORLD’S RICHEST MAN SAID ABOUT CANADA?

On X – which Elon Musk owns – he clapped back at news of the petition.

In a since-deleted tweet, he posted: “Canada is not a real country.”

Late last year, Elon tweeted: “Canada is dying”. He also threw shade at the Prime Minister, adding: “Trudeau is trying to crush free speech in Canada. Shameful”.
