Former Skeem Saam actress Pebetsi Matlaila has opened up on social media about her financial hardships.
She shared that she is currently homeless and staying in a shelter with her children.
PEBETSI SAYS SHE IS HOMELESS AND CURRENTLY LIVING IN A SHELTER
The entertainment industry is known for its unpredictability, and securing steady work can be challenging. Former Skeem Saam actress Pebetsi Matlaila is the latest celebrity to open up about her difficulties landing another sustainable job.
The actress shared her financial struggles, revealing that she and her children are currently living in a shelter. Pebetsi explained that she wanted to be the one to share her story.
In an emotional Instagram video, she spoke about being unable to pay rent, which led to her eviction and her need to seek refuge at a women’s shelter.
Pebetsi acknowledged that while she had been taking on a few gigs here and there, they weren’t sufficient to cover her expenses.
“I’m owning my story, and nobody is going to tell it for me or about me. That’s how I remove the shame and regain my power. So yes, my kids and I are staying at a shelter at a women’s and children’s safety house owned by the police department. It’s very safe here; only women and children are allowed, and everything is provided for. And they keep you safe until you feel ready to go out on your own. Especially if you’re coming from a domestic violence situation,” she wrote.
‘I DON’T LIKE TO OVERBURDEN PEOPLE’
The actress said she has been surviving on a radio gig for a while, but it’s been difficult to secure another job.
She also said that she didn’t opt to stay with friends or family because she didn’t want to burden them.
“You can stay here as long as you need until you’re back on your feet. I’ve been trying to survive for the longest time with my one job, which is in radio. However, it has been difficult to find additional work.
“As for staying with friends or family, I don’t like to overburden people. Besides not knowing how to ask for help, I also don’t want to feel like a burden,” she said.
The actress revealed that her financial situation took a downturn after separating from her ex and having to provide for herself alone.
“From October to December, I couldn’t pay rent, and eventually, I was evicted. I honestly thought my book would become my primary source of income. But that wasn’t a well-calculated move. I’ve been working in radio, but it’s not enough,” she said.
