Cape Town’s Glencairn neighbourhood residents will experience a scheduled water supply disruption from 8:00 to 18:00 on Tuesday, 21 January. The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate will perform critical maintenance, including pipe and valve replacements, to improve the area’s water infrastructure.

Affected areas in Cape Town and water maintenance details

The maintenance work will impact residents along Cockburn and Camilla Streets, Birkenhead Road, Tercentenary Way, and surrounding areas. The City will transfer water supply to a temporary bypass while replacing the main pipeline in these streets. The Directorate assures the public that this upgrade is necessary to ensure long-term benefits.

The city stated, “This critical maintenance work is done on our water-supply infrastructure to benefit customers.”

Residents are urged to store water in clean, sealed containers to ensure they have enough for household use during the outage. The city also reminded the public that water might appear milky or discoloured shortly after restoration due to trapped air in the pipes.

Safety precautions and potential delays

The city emphasised that all maintenance sites are construction zones and are off-limits to the public for safety reasons. While the work is expected to conclude within the planned hours, unforeseen complexities could extend the disruption.

“The city sincerely regrets any inconvenience,” added the city.

For updates, residents can monitor the City’s official X account, @CityofCTAlerts. Water tankers will be stationed in affected areas if necessary.

Preparing for the disruption

To reduce inconvenience, the city advises residents to store adequate water and keep taps closed during the disruption to prevent leaks or damage once supply resumes.

How do you think the city can better support residents during maintenance work?
