Back to school is around the corner, and parents have been sharing their bizarre requirements on their children’s stationery lists.
Learners around South Africa return for term one on Wednesday, 15 January.
SA PARENTS SHARE BIZARRE STATIONERY LIST DEMANDS
On the X platform, user @MissS__S questioned Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gwarube about bizarre school requirements for their child’s official stationery pack.
The tweep posted: “Hi Minister, Why are parents being told to buy Pine gel, Dishwashing liquid, beans, and Domestos when kids return to school?”
While the minister did not respond, the comments section was filled with fellow parents sharing more unusual stationery demands.
@LiswaBri: “On my daughter’s stationery list, we have to buy her a chair, Jik, and Sunlight Liquid.”
@HlengiweVibes: “A school in Potch had Cobra Floor Polish in its stationery list.”
@miss_machika: “The primary school also wants Baby Soft toilet paper.”
BACK TO SCHOOL FOR ALL SA LEARNERS
According to the official calendar, both inland and coastal region schools across South Africa will return on Wednesday, 15 January, for the start of term one. Schools will close for the year on 12 December at the end of term four.
National Department of Basic Education spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga said the calendar was synchronised to “minimise traffic congestion on roads”.
He added: “The aim is to allocate different dates to the two clusters in the first term so that traffic density before the opening of schools for the new school year is kept within acceptable levels.
“The focus is on ensuring that there is no loss in terms of the number of days allocated for schooling.”
