Police have brought 153 alleged illegal miners to the surface during a four-day operation at the abandoned South Mine in Sabie, Mpumalanga. The multi-agency operation also recovered three bodies, showing the dangers of illegal mining activities in the province.

A coordinated effort across agencies

The operation, led by the South African Police Service (SAPS), involved various stakeholders, including the Department of Home Affairs, Department of Health, the South African National Defence Force, private security companies, and a mining company.

Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi praised the teamwork and professionalism displayed by all parties in rescuing the alleged illegal miners.

Authorities reported no injuries during the operation. Among those rescued were South Africans, Basotho, Zimbabweans, and Mozambicans, reflecting the cross-border nature of illegal mining activities.

Investigation into illegal mining underway

Law enforcement has investigated the illegal mining operations at South Mine. Mkhwanazi assured the public that justice would be served and urged patience as the investigation unfolded.

“The investigation into the illegal mining activities has already begun to ensure justice is served. We plead with everyone to allow this team a space to conduct their investigation without being distracted and the public will be notified in due course. Meanwhile, Operation Vala Umgodi will continue to be active to curb illegal mining activities in the province,” Mkhwanazi said.

Should South Africa strengthen penalties and expand initiatives like Operation Vala Umgodi to combat illegal mining more effectively?
