Just like food, skincare products reach their shelf life date and it becomes hard to use if they are expired. A solution for this would be to toss out your old products and simply replace them.

Some beauty lovers like to get their money’s worth when it comes to skincare products meaning that they won’t throw away old products regardless of the expiry date, and as much as we all want to save a buck or two in this tight economy, various beauty experts advise tossing expiring products as they are no longer good for your skin.

Allure’s dermatologist, Roberto Del Campo says, “Mould grows where there is an ideal environment for it, moisture, warmth, and food are all necessary for mould to grow.”

According to beauty hub, Skin Software, our skin is the largest organ of our bodies meaning that it is important to ensure that you always take care of it.

The beauty hub also mentions that some of our daily routine skincare products are made up of chemicals and ingredients that are likely prone to bacteria growth that can cause unpleasant breakouts on your skin if you apply those products.

Despite your skincare products expiring, Glamour advises that you store your products in a cool dry place away from the sun or invest in mini-fridges if you like the aesthetic of it.

Before you toss out your old products, Skin Software adds ways you can know what is old and what isn’t, and while on some products the date is added, you can still self-test them yourself.

The above-mentioned source states that the 2 ways are in the smell or consistency of the product (if applied comes out hard etc), and the colour of the product (some skincare products usually turn yellow or brown when old).
