Orlando Pirates could face Mamelodi Sundowns in the quarter-finals of the CAF Champions League next month.
The Buccaneers retained top spot in Group C after defeating Al Ahly 2-1 away. Goals from Relebohile Mofokeng and Tshegofatso Mabasa were enough to see Pirates finish top of their CAF CL group which had Al Ahly, CR Belouizdad and State d’Abidjan. Jose Riveiro’s men collected 14 points from six matches and are one of the few unbeaten teams in the competition.
Orlando Pirates will play in their first CAF CL quarter-finals since reaching the final back in 2013. With Mameodi Sundowns reaching the quarters, it sees two South African teams in the quarter-finals which is rare in this competition. Masandawana finished second in Group B, finishing a point behind AS FAR.
Who will Orlando Pirates face in the CAF QF?
Having topped their group, the Buccaneers will potentially face three teams which finished runner-ups in their groups. The teams are Sundowns, MC Alger and Pyramids. Having played Al Ahly twice in the group stages, the Sea Robbers will not face the Red Devils in the last eight.
What do fans want to see?
Most South African fans want to see Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns battle out in the CAF CL competition. No South African teams have ever played each other in this competition and if that happens, it will be a historic moment.
Both teams are aiming to win not only the Champions League and the Betway Premiership. Ironically, the two giants have not played each other this season but the feeling is they might face each other more than twice the campaign.
Orlando Pirates are slight favourites to win the CAF CL based on their recent performance. Having gone unbeaten so far, one can expect to put their money on the Buccaneers over Masandawana.
