Orlando Pirates are reportedly targeting a former Kaizer Chiefs star to boost their defence ranks for next season.

Pirates did not do any business in the January transfer window, despite repeatedly links to players  until the end.

Pirates made no signings in January

It was believed that Pirates would announce deals for Polokwane City duo Oswin Appollis and Thabang Matuludi in January. In the end, the deal did not happen. The club are also believed to be eyeing Stellenbosch FC left-back Fawaaz Basadien. The Bafana Bafana international is expected to move in the close season. But it is now believed that should he not move to the Buccaneers, they have a plan B.

Coincidently that also includes a Stellenbosch player. That in the form of former Chiefs DDC captain Omega Mdaka. According to Soccer-Laduma, Pirates are viewing him as an alternative to Basadien at left-back.

“You see that young defender? The left back who came from Chiefs? Yes, Mdaka, Orlando Pirates are monitoring him. They are finding it difficult to get Fawaaz (Basadien) so they think Omega (Mdaka) would be a good option. He is still young and he has great potential. They are monitoring him first before they could make any move,”said one source to the same publication.

A second source confirmed that the pursuit for Mdaka is inline with strengthening Pirates’ left-back options for next season.

Targeting ex-Chiefs star Mdaka?

“This could work properly for the club (Pirates) because at the moment their main focus in the defence is left back. They only have Innocent Maela who is not playing that much and then Paseka Mako who just returned from injury and that’s why Deon Hotto has mainly been playing in that position. So, now they are looking for another left back and Mdaka has emerged as one of the top targets according to their scouts and recruiters. So, let’s wait and see,”said the source.
