Orlando Pirates have released a vintage jersey but the price might be prohibitive for some of their fanatical supporters across Mzansi. Are you keen?

Pirates drop a jersey

Via Football SA on Facebook, Orlando Pirates have released a vintage jersey on sale for R2499 a pop. Click the link to see how Lucky Lekgwathi looks wearing the strip.

Lekgwathi’s Legacy with Orlando Pirates

Lekgwathi famously and loyally donned the number 14 jersey for the Buccaneers for 14 years, making over 300 appearances. He won six major honours with two DStv Premiership crowns and two MTN8 titles as part of a stellar trophy collection. He is, without question, their most successful skipper in the modern era. Lekgwathi called time on his illustrious career in 2016. The uncompromising central defender also, fittingly, won 14 Bafana Bafana caps.

Where is Lucky Lekgwathi now?

Lekgwathi is now a successful and active entrepreneur. His focus right now is his Grootman Restaurant. Their spices and sauces range is currently stocked in Checkers stores around Mzansi and dubbed “The Grootman Legends Selection” with current PSL stars Teboho Mokoena and Kermit Erasmus as two of the brand’s ambassadors. It wasn’t all sun and rainbows for LL14 in his business ventures though, with looters damaging his Grootman premises in July 2021. He’s also run into other difficulties.

“I tried investing in a butchery near Sebokeng in 2014, and it didn’t work out; I lost my money there. I then tried my hand at the funeral parlour business. That didn’t work again,” Lekgwathi told FARPost.

Besides the restaurant, Lucky is building his clothing brand ‘F14’. “The ‘F’ stands for Fantastic in ‘Captain Fantastic’, and 14 is a special number for me,” he explains. A truly legendary figure in Orlando Pirates folklore, Mr. Lekgwathi has rolled with the punches and used adversity as a massive motivator throughout his playing career and beyond.

Upcoming fixtures for the Sea Robbers

Meanwhile, Riveiro’s men have a trio of league encounters to prepare for in the next five weeks and they’ve also got two tasty Caf Champions League clashes on the horizon. The visit of African champions Al Ahly on 06 December is one to get in the diary. There’s also the prospect of a meeting with Bafana and former Cape Town City striker Khanyisa Mayo when Pirates go North to face Belouizdad of Algeria.
