Orlando Pirates have put out feelers for a new left back, and they see Fawaaz Basadien as their number one target.
Pirates are gearing up to secure a game-changing addition to their squad. The Buccaneers have set their sights on Basadien, Stellenbosch FC’s standout left-back, known for his exceptional performances and versatility.
Basadien has firmly established himself as a crucial player for Stellenbosch. Week after week, he dominates the pitch with skill, determination, and consistency, earning admiration. His contributions have made him an irreplaceable part of the team.
Basadien’s talent caught the eye of many earlier this season, with reports linking him to a potential transfer to Kaizer Chiefs. While the deal ultimately fell through, it allowed him to continue thriving at Stellenbosch, where he’s been a force to reckon with.
National asset: From club success to AFCON call-up
Basadien’s stellar performances haven’t been confined to club football. His exceptional form earned him a call-up to the Bafana Bafana squad for the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, cementing his reputation as one of South Africa’s top football talents.
This season, the left-back has proven his value with 20 appearances across all competitions, scoring five goals and providing three assists. Beyond his attacking contributions, Basadien’s defensive prowess has helped Stellenbosch achieve a remarkable number of clean sheets, showcasing his ability to balance offense and defense seamlessly.
Pirates’ current left-back options
Orlando Pirates currently rely on Deon Hotto (34), Innocent Maela (32), and Paseka Mako (30) for their left-back position. While Hotto has been the most utilized, appearing 18 times in his 20 outings this season and contributing three goals and four assists, Maela and Mako have struggled with limited game time.
Mako, in particular, has faced challenges due to injuries. After suffering a knee ligament injury during a friendly against Eswatini in October 2023, he missed 36 matches, including the Nedbank Cup final. Although he made a triumphant return to the team in September 2024, his injury history raises concerns.
Basadien: Perfect fit for Pirates’ ambitions
Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro is reportedly keen on bringing Basadien into the squad. A source revealed, “Pirates want another Stellies player, but the left-back Chiefs also wanted, Basadien. Riveiro believes his versatility will fit in perfectly with his current way of playing. Getting him in January will be hard, but they will try.”
Basadien’s adaptability and proven track record make him an ideal candidate to bolster Pirates’ defence and add depth to their squad. His ability to contribute both defensively and offensively aligns perfectly with Riveiro’s tactical approach.
While Orlando Pirates are eager to bring Basadien on board during the January transfer window, prying him away from Stellenbosch won’t be easy. With his consistent performances and rising stock, Stellenbosch FC will likely be reluctant to part ways with their star player mid-season.
